BUYING A PRELOVED BIKE CAN SAVE YOU MONEY.

Is now the best time to buy a used bike?

As new bike prices continue to slide after the Covid boom and the subsequent oversupply of bikes within the cycling industry, now is a great time to buy used.

Most riders change their bikes, not because there’s anything wrong with their current one but they just want the latest model colourway, a lighter faster bike or the latest groupset. Often there’s nothing wrong with the bike they are looking to sell and in our experience most of them have been well looked after and often have expensive options fitted such as carbon wheels.

Like most things, once the bike has left the shop it’s classed as used, even if it’s for just a few miles. This means that the price drops, often dramatically with high end bikes, which is good news for people looking to buy second-hand. If you search out those bikes that had extras and upgrades fitted when new, you can find even bigger savings as these rarely add significant value to the bike.

What to look out for.

When looking for a bike it’s important to get one that suits your needs and is the right size for you. It may sound obvious, but a lot of people are sold on the colour or specification and never consider whether they will fit on it.

 

Ask the owner questions. If they’re a keen cyclist they’ll be happy to chat to you about it (often for hours)!

  • Why are you selling?
  • Where did you buy it from?
  • Are you the original owner?
  • Do you have the purchase invoice and supporting paperwork?

 

If you’re buying a bike with a carbon frame or components, check them over carefully for any signs of damage – cracks in the paintwork can be a sign of the carbon integrity being compromised. The only way you can really be sure is to have the bike X-rayed by a specialist company.

 

Drive trains are the beating heart of the bike and will eventually wear out and need replacing. Look for signs of wear to the teeth on the chain rings and rear cassette and don’t be afraid to take a chain wear tool with you to see if has stretched.

 

Has the bike been cleaned? This a sign that the owner takes pride in their bike and has looked after it.

 

A lot of bikes are stolen every day so it’s important to do your due diligence. Check the bike still has the serial number stickers attached and if so, check them against the stolen bike register here.
